NCCK Mourns 16 Learners Lost in Utumishi Girls Academy Dormitory Fire, Calls for Accountability

NAIROBI, 28 May 2026 – The National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) has expressed profound sorrow following the tragic death of 16 learners in a dormitory fire at Utumishi Girls Academy earlier today.

In a statement issued from Jumuia Place, Nairobi, the Council extended its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, friends, and the entire school community affected by the tragedy.

NCCK assured the families of its prayers and support as they navigate this painful period, while also praying for the speedy recovery of learners and staff who sustained physical and emotional injuries.

The Council described the incident as a heartbreaking reminder of the devastating consequences that can arise when safety standards and emergency preparedness measures are neglected.

"The tragic death of these young learners is a heartbreaking reminder that neglect of stipulated standards by responsible authorities can have very costly consequences. The failure to enforce school safety requirements and disaster preparedness measures often results in the loss of innocent lives," the statement noted.

NCCK questioned how many more learners must perish before meaningful action is taken to ensure compliance with school safety regulations across the country.

The Council further emphasized the need for accountability among officials responsible for enforcing safety standards in educational institutions, warning that negligence in the discharge of public duties carries serious consequences for families and communities.

In addition, NCCK called upon investigative agencies to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the cause of the fire and determine whether any acts of omission or commission contributed to the tragedy.

The Council urged that all individuals found responsible be held accountable under the law, stressing that the incident must become a turning point in strengthening safety measures within Kenyan schools.

"This must not become another tragic episode that fades from public memory after expressions of sympathy. It should mark the moment when the nation collectively says enough is enough and takes decisive action to protect learners in school environments," the statement said.

NCCK also called upon Kenyans to keep the affected families, learners, teachers, and the entire Utumishi Girls Academy community in prayer during this difficult time.

The statement was signed by Rev. Canon Chris Kinyanjui on behalf of the National Council of Churches of Kenya on 28 May 2026 at Jumuia Place, Nairobi.
